This documentary
film follows the reconstruction of the kanrnyx, a giant Celtic trumpet
documented by some archaeological recoveries in France, Scotland and Sanzeno
(Trentino, Italy). In order to avoid the typical documentary story-telling,
sometimes way too technical and cold, the extraordinariness of Trentino’s
recovery is told through the experience of Alessandro Ervas, main character of
the movie and blacksmith, archaeo-still- worker committed in the complex and
hard attempt of reconstructing the ancient musical instrument.
Ervas, in order
to achieve his goal, beyond comparing his theories with expert archaeologists
and musicologists, will have to overcome difficulties related to the exact
reproduction of karnyx’s material: in fact, bronze alloy of Sanzenos’ karnyx,
according to nowadays science, cannot be laminated. Thus, Ervas has to
reconstruct something current technology would not be able to construct, but
that at the same time ancient Celtic used to build 25 centuries ago. In the end
of the documentary film, maybe, the karnyx will give to the audience a piece of
eternity producing its ancient sound: the challenge will be won only when and
if it will be possible to understand if and how the musical instrument sounds.
