The old Tobacco Factory
The old Tobacco Factory of Rovereto (known as the Tabakfabrik, Imperia Regia Manifattura d’Austria-Ungheria, under Austro-Hungarian rule) is located in the town of Borgo Sacco, in Rovereto.
The factory was opened in 1854: by the end of the century, it employed over a thousand workers, mostly women, so-called ‘zigherane’. Today the factory houses the Green Innovation Factory project, a start-up incubator for the eco-friendly construction, renewable energy, and environmental technology sectors.
