Lake Tovel

Lake Tovel is an alpine lake in the Municipality of Tuenno, at 1,178m above sea level in the Adamello Brenta Nature Park.
It is also referred to as the ‘Lake of the Bears’ because the valley is home to brown bears, and the ‘Red Lake’ due to a unique natural phenomenon: the waters are reddened by a special kind of algae that once spread abnormally, flowering on the surface during the summer. Unfortunately this natural phenomena, which occurred intensively up until the mid-1960s, has gradually lessened and now occurs very little.
